As an alternative to going to the local theater, people resorted to listening to their favorite radio stories such as and very often the entire family would huddle around the radio in dead silence as stories were told.

Instead of watching a movie, people could listen to popular movie stars and invited guests as they told stories of romance, adventure and mystery. Entire families would huddle around one small radio and would listen with great intent to the popular movie stars of that era.

Musical performances put on by Big Bands were another great hit during the Great Depression. People would listen to these musical shows and stage performances over the radio as an alternative to spending money for movie tickets. It was very popular.

The economic woes during those times may have made life unnecessarily hard, but people seemed to find a way to keep themselves entertained. This is how they had fun and is a testament to their sense of determination to move forward while hoping for better days.

Looking back we have come a long way with movie entertainment. The Internet and advanced technology has taken the movie watching experience to an unlimited level. Not only do we have special cinema and sound effects to include 3D viewing, but entertaining movies have become a common source of entertainment for everyone.

When it comes to choosing a screen, the first consideration is the type of screen you want or even need. If the room where you are setting up your home theater is large, then you will have to have a home theater projection screen or maybe you just want one anyway.

I, personally, like the idea of having a drop-down screen, but sometimes you have to have one even in a modestly-sized home movie theater. It would convert your living room into a home movie theater. Imagine: you recline in your chair; click the remote and a screen drops down; click another remote and the lights dim; click another one and the film commences!

If you prefer a television screen, then you might be considering purchasing a new one if you can afford it. They say that a 27 inch screen is large enough, but I do not think that it is. In my opinion, you really need 48-60 inches, but then I am a baby-boomer and my eyes are definitely not what they once were.

If you are buying a new TV for your home theater, I think you should aim high. HDTV is upon us and since February 2009 the USA is committed to High Definition. So, I would make sure that your new TV is capable of receiving it. Then I suggest that the new home theater screen be a flat one to reduce the annoying glare that could ruin the experience. (This could be another reason for opting for a projection screen).

Finally, you should make sure that the new television has enough input and output plugs for the peripheral equipment you have in mind and you're done. Therefore, to summarize, I recommend you go for:

Get the "non-cooks" to bring the condiments, chips, and paper supplies. This will not only be lots of fun as everyone tries out different or new foods, but it will also eliminate the stress of having to please everyone by yourself.
