By Susan Cummings

At some point in their lives, most people indulge in a mixed drink. Not only do mixed drinks offer a wide variety of colors, flavors and degrees of alcohol, they are simply fun to enjoy.

Mixed drinks are often served at parties, get togethers, office functions and many other social gatherings. But how much do you really know about mixed drinks? Here's a quick primer on the types of mixed drinks and the differences between them. It will make you the expert at your next event.

Cobbler: A cobbler is a beverage made with wine or sherry, citrus juice and sugar. A good example of a simple cobbler is a Cream Sherry Cobbler. Here's the drink recipe: 2 1/2 oz cream sherry, 1 tsp superfine sugar, 3 oz club soda. Add the sugar to an old-fashioned glass. Pour in the club soda, and stir to dissolve. Add crushed ice until the glass is almost full, then add sherry, and stir well. Garnish with a maraschino cherry, a slice of orange, and a slice of lemon, and serve.

Cocktail: Originally, a cocktail was a specific type of mixed drink. A cocktail was a drink made with liquor, sugar, water and bitters. Over time, however, the term "cocktail" has come to be used to describe any type of mixed alcoholic drink. Here's a current favorite cocktail drink recipe served around the world. Sex On The Beach: 1 1/2 oz vodka, 1/2 oz peach schnapps, 2 oz cranberry juice, 2 oz orange juice. Add schnapps and vodka to a glass over ice. Fill with equal parts cranberry and orange juice, and stir. Serve in a highball glass.

Crusta: Crustas, such as a Bourbon Crusta, contain liquor and fruit juice and are served in a sugar rimmed glass. The Bourbon Crusta is the perfect new drink for you to serve at your next party. The drink recipe combines 1 1/2 oz bourbon whiskey, 1/2 oz Cointreau orange liqueur, 2 tsp maraschino liqueur, 1/2 oz lemon juice, 1 tbsp superfine sugar, and 1 lemon wedge. Rub the rim of a wine glass with the lemon wedge and dip into sugar, coating the rim of the glass thoroughly. Cut a spiral of orange peel and place it inside the glass. You can drape it over one side if you like. Add crushed ice until the glass is full. Put the bourbon, Cointreau, maraschino and lemon juice into a cocktail shaker and shake well. Stain this mixture into the glass and serve.

Flip: A flip is an alcoholic mixed drink incorporating beaten egg, especially one made with liquor or wine, sugar, and egg, topped with powdered nutmeg and served hot or cold. One popular type of flip is the Cherry Flip. Here's the drink recipe: 1 1/2 oz cherry brandy,1 tsp powdered sugar, 2 tsp light cream, 1 whole egg, nutmeg. Shake all ingredients (except nutmeg) with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Sprinkle nutmeg on top and serve.
