Melbourne Australia Travel Review - The Best Tours To Take

By James Lushe

Melbourne is one of the easiest places to tour in Australia. It is flat, compact and arranged in a well-thought-out grid pattern. But that doesn't mean it's going to be a boring tour as there is so much to see and admire in this city.

First time visitors to Melbourne should start their travels by jumping on the tram which circles the perimeter of the main business and shopping areas of the city. This gives you the chance to get an introduction to a lot of great places you'll want to visit properly later. It's recommended that once you finish your tram ride, you start out walking the famous Melbourne Golden Mile trail, which will ensure you get to see many of the best known and famous historic sites.

There are half-day bus tours such as the Marvelous Melbourne Tour that takes visitors through the inner suburbs like Carlton, Albert Park and Port Melbourne while the Melbourne Sports Tours is an excellent way for sports buffs to discover why the city is the sporting capital of Australia.

If your tastes are a little more upmarket, you could consider trying a hot air balloon ride or a river cruise to see the city in all its glory. For something more adventurous, why not take a flying tour in a seaplane. Both Dog Scenic Flights and Melbourne Seaplanes can give you a thrilling experience if this appeals to you.

You can even go on a ghost hunting tour with the Haunted Melbourne Ghost Tour. This one is done on foot and visits some of the city's more "paranormally active" areas. Alternatively, why not learn about Melbourne's colourful history and past with tours to the town hall or cemetery. You'll have a laugh hearing about some of Melbourne's "interesting" historical characters, as well as seeing a view of life in days gone by.

Lovers of chocolate and other sweet treats will be thrilled by the Chocolate Lovers Walk. Get in the chocolate mood (that should be easy!) at lunchtime with luxury products, hot chocolate and Belgian chocolate muffin cakes! There are quite a few different tours like this, to help satisfy your sweet tooth, while also introducing you to the city itself. Once you've satisfied the sweet tooth, check out some of the other food tours, including the Colonial Tram Car Restaurants tour, which introduces you to Melbourne's 2 great loves: trams and food.

Shopaholics rejoice! Melbourne even has a bus tour for you, called the Shopping Spree tour. It takes you to some of Melbourne's best shopping hideaways - the factory and warehouse outlets that Melbourne is famous for.

Melbourne has an excellent Heritage Walk, for those wanting insight into the Aboriginal culture and history that once lived in this part of pre-settled Australia. While you're on this tour, you'll also get the opportunity to see and marvel at Melbourne's famous Royal Botanic Gardens

For the upscale traveler who loves to explore, taking a day trip out of Melbourne will lead you to some of Australia's best tourist attractions, including South Gippsland, Philip Island, Sovereign Hill, Grampians National Park, the Great Ocean Road and the historic goldmining towns of Bendigo and Ballarat. Also, the Yarra Valley wine region is an excellent destination for wine connoisseurs.

To finish off a wonderful visit to Melbourne, you should definitely consider spending a day at one of the delightful spa resorts at Daylesford or Hepburn Springs. You'll be glad you made the effort while you're relaxing in a natural mineral springs bath.
